Talking Shrink

22 Apr

Letterbalm Woman in Black + DoctorDear LetterBalm: I’m facing an ethical problem, and I’m not sure what to do or say. The man I’m seeing is best buddies with a psychotherapist. I felt I needed therapy to work through some issues. My boyfriend persuaded me to join a group run by his friend. I thought it was “so far, so good” – the therapy and group interaction had been going well. But my boyfriend has referred to numerous things I’ve discussed in group, even quoting me exactly. I think his shrink friend is talking to him about me, and I bitterly regret joining the group. Please help me here.

–Loose Lips

Frogmarch this guy to the edge of a pier and push him off, and throw your boyfriend in after him. Your shrink’s behavior infuriates Ms. L.B. – to breach the trust of someone in a vulnerable position is the worst kind of betrayal. Right away, and without discussing this with anyone, write a letter reporting the therapist to the appropriate professional standards group, clearly citing dates and details. (Ms. L.B. will be happy to compose a custom letter.) After you send the letter, reexamine your relationship with your boyfriend, and tell him why he has behaved abominably. He and his shrink friend deserve each other. Then, have a private in-person talk with the therapist. Don’t be daunted; you have right on your side:

Serge, you encourage your patients to speak up in group, so I’m speaking up now. I advise you to listen carefully. On numerous occasions, Matthew has mentioned highly confidential matters I brought up in therapy – he has even used the exact words I used. This leads me to believe you are talking about my sessions with my boyfriend. This is the most serious ethical violation for a therapist, and you know it. You also know that this kind of intolerable breach of professional conduct is a matter for the state standards board. In any case, I am ending my group sessions with you immediately.

A frogmarch is similar to a perp walk, only with handcuffs. A frogmarch is actually too good for those two.
