Weighty Problem

Letterbalm Woman's Feet on ScaleDear LetterBalm: Two years ago, I suffered a back injury, which makes it impossible for me to exercise. I weigh more than 200 pounds, and my family has a history of diabetes and stroke. So, I must watch my eating very carefully to lose weight and maintain my weight via diet. But my family and friends sabotage my food choices by giving me a hard time and getting insulted if I don’t eat. Colleagues act hurt if I can’t eat food they bring to the breakroom. Family and friends force food on me at buffets and gatherings – I dread holiday dinners and birthday parties. I need something to say to disarm everybody and stop hurt feelings.

–Choked Up

This is the sort of infuriating problem that good manners won’t solve. Ms. L.B. says you must pull no punches because your health is paramount. It’s true that food conjures other connotations such as community, shared fun and joy, even love. But you need to tell people that because of severe health issues, your food intake is strictly regulated by your doctor. Tell them you appreciate their generosity, but you regard this as a closed issue and you hope they understand and not take it personally:

I can’t eat this, and I hope you will understand it’s not about you personally. I’m on a strict diet under doctor’s care. I have serious food issues, and it’s medically impossible for me to eat a lot of foods. You’d never force a drink on an alcoholic, right? I know you’d be horrified if I got sick. I so appreciate your generosity but I’m asking for your help and support in this and not bringing it up again. I hope you agree with me that, while sharing food is nice, it’s more important for us to share our company.

The best thing may be to get away from them to let you recover. Most people discourage others because it makes them reflect on their bad choices.

You can be the pioneer and change your whole families path.
